Our goal is to address every concern you have about storing sensitive data on a hosted server. For this very reason, we're happy to announce the launch of Anu's ultra-secure servers which provide strong protection from the ground up -- from both physical and virtual threats.
Physical Security: Data CentreAt this time our secure server is available based out of our Amsterdam 2 and Chicago, IL data centres, where the level of infrastructure and security protocols far exceed the industry norm. Security is taken extremely seriously.
Some of the measures in place include:- Double door entry system: nobody can sneak in as an authorised person enters or exits the data centre
- Stringent identity checks (passport or ID card) for all persons entering and exiting the data centre
- 24/7 manned security desk
- Recorded CCTV footage of interior and exterior of the building
- Discreet, unmarked buildings
Once inside the data centre, further access controls include:
- Proximity card-based access control allows entry only to authorised areas of the building
- Individually locked colocation cabinets
- Under-floor cabling with intrusion detection to ensure secure power and data transmission within the building
Physical Security: Disk EncryptionWe understand the concerns many people have about storing sensitive data on a hosted system. You don't usually have any kind of physical access to the medium your data is stored on, and in many cases you will not even know the physical location where the data is stored. Our response to this challenge is to offer whole disk encryption for your Anu secure server.
Any files that you store on your secure server are encrypted on the fly before being written to disk. This prevents unauthorised access should an attacker gain access to the physical storage.
How it Works
We'll preconfigure the encryption and provide you with a password. This password must be entered during system startup via the remote console. We recommend that you change this password immediately and add an extra password which should be given to someone you trust. You may add multiple passwords, any of which will allow your disk to be decrypted. Without at least one correct password your data will be completely inaccessible and we will not be able to recover access to it.
Virtual Security: Less Is MoreMost standard operating system installs come with dozens of software packages that you might want. This is convenient, but it also means that a security hole in some software you don't even use could lead to a compromised system. Our philosophy regarding server software is that less is more. We start with a very minimal CentOS installation, then install only those services which you require. For example, a base install will be running just SSH, an snmp agent and a firewall.
The second aspect of the less is more philosophy is that of knowledge. When you are only running a handful of necessary services, you can get to know each of those services very well. The configuration files can be fine-tuned for maximum security and performance relevant to your application. This reduces the likelihood of making a critical mistake that impacts on system security.
Virtual Security: NetworkOur secure servers come preconfigured with a restrictive firewall with both public and private IPs. Access to administrative services such as SSH will only be allowed from the private network interface by default, thus requiring the use of a secure VPN connection from your workstation or gateway.
The private IP network is physically segregated from the public network, ensuring the highest level of protection.
For customers with multiple secure servers, private network interface can be used to transfer data between the servers quickly and securely with no data transfer fees.
